Bikeways Committee Minutes 09/07/2011

BIKEWAYS COMMITTEE
Minutes of September 7, 2011 Meeting
___________________________________________________

The meeting was called to order at 8:15 AM.

Present: Cocchiola, Dobek, Donahoe, Giblin, Parmelee, Schofield
Absent: (none)

The minutes of August 3, 2011 were approved as presented.

Old Business

  • PMC.  Discussion concluded that everything went very well.  All agreed that the Eastham police officers were great.  Only problem noted was that the yellow crosswalk paint was very slippery due to recent painting and damp weather.
  • Letters. The chair has not yet written the letter regarding crosswalk signs discussed at the August meeting, but will do so soon, and will also send the reply regarding the Basics of Better Biking project.
  • Driving Range Fence.  Paul decided not to contact owners about fence.
New Business

  • Improvement of Rail Trail maintenance by DCR was noted. The trail edges were mowed before the PMC, and response and clean-up after Storm Irene was timely and well-done.  Bob will write to Jon Petersen at Nickerson State Park thanking him for the quick response
  • It was noted that there have been continuing problems and accidents in the Rail Trail tunnel. The Chair will contact the police chief for support in again asking DCR for better signage and warning. This committee has made such requests several times previously without effective response.
  • Sheri Cocchiola is a member of Eastham NRTA and understands that there may be funds available from that group for a biking safety banner.  She will ask the Town Administrator for permission for Bikeways to ask NRTA to fund a banner which would be used during any local biking event. Wording of said sign was discussed.  It was moved and passed unanimously that the banner should say, “Bike Event. Share the Road”.
  • The Americorps application will be completed and submitted soon.
  • Carol Dobek was contacted by the previous chair who suggested that we use a local shop for t-shirts for the bike event next spring.  Carol will investigate.
  • Elections were held for officers. Terms begin immediately.  Nominated were Chair, Bob Donahoe; Vice-Chair, Paul Schofield; Clerk, Judy Parmelee.  All were elected unanimously.
The Committee will meet next on 5 October 2011.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 AM.

Respectfully submitted,

Judy Parmelee, Clerk
